National Budget Swells to Over U.S.$347 Million - Civil Servant Pay Hits
U.S.$80 President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has officially submitted the 2009/2010 National Budget of US$347,035,687 million to the National Legislature for scrutiny and passage into law.The Ministry of Finance says the budget reflects an increment in wages for civil servants, teachers, and members of the security, among others. Under Wage and Income policies, civil servant will get a minimum salary of US$80.00; teachers and professional health workers US$100 while minimum salary for personnel of restructured security institutions swells to US$100 The Speaker of the House of Representatives yesterday received the budget and is expected to be opened for discussion today. The Ministry Pubic Works, the health sector, education and the justice system carry the lion share of the budget of 15, 11, 8 and 8, 93 percent respectively. Meanwhile President Sirleaf has commended the Liberia Institute for Geo-Information Services for the successful conduct of the 2008 National Census and forwarded the final report to the national legislature. "It is the President's belief that the legislature will act expeditiously on the census report which has wide ranging implications over critical national issues, including the threshold bill," Presidential Press secretary Cyrus Badio said yesterday.
