Dr. Dorothy Harriet Eugenia Musuleng
Cooper 'D-Mus' Sunrise: 09-09-1930 ~ Sunset: 06-30-2009 The Cooper, Hoggard, Knight, Neale-Caulker, and Herring families announce the glorious home going of their loved one, Dorothy Harriet Eugenia Musuleng Cooper. 'D-Mus', 'Tratee', 'Big Mama', 'Teacher Dorothy', 'Rock of Gibraltar', 'International Lady', 'Aunt Dot' as she was affectionately called, was born on September 9, 1930 unto Augustus Washington Cooper, Sr. and Irene Anna Flossy Knight. 'D-Mus' quietly 'stole away' on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the John F. Kennedy Hospital. She was 79.Mrs. Cooper served a few years ago as acting president of the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU). She was once Associate Director for Training, Peace Corps Liberia. In the 1970s and 1980s she served as chief administrator of the School System of the Liberian, Swedish American Company, LAMCO, at the time one of Africa’s biggest companies. In the 1990s she was appointed Foreign Minister of Liberia, the first woman to hold that post. The second is the current Foreign Minister, Olubankie King Akelere. Dorothy Musuleng Cooper was born on Sept. 9, 1930 in Arthington, Montserrado County to the union of Augustus (Gus) Washington Cooper and Irene Anna Flossy Knight. She was a product of Bromley Mission and College of West Africa (CWA), where she completed her secondary education in 1949. In the 1950s she was wedded to Sergeant Samuel Herring of the Armed Forces of Liberia, who later rose to the rank of General. To that union several children were born. She obtained the Bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Elementary Education from San Franscisco State University, and both times graduated magna cum laude. Her daughter Madia, who lives in Maryland, USA, remembers her mom as “a mother to everybody.” Mrs. Cooper had eight biological children, four of whom predeceased her. They were Delrene, Harriett, Carol and McDonald. Survivors
include several sisters and brothers: Eva Mae Caulker, Amelia Cooper, Ivy Zoe Cooper, Mrs. Ethel Cooper Barrie, Evangeline
Cooper Gaba, Augusta Cooper, Small Amelia Cooper, Hannah Cooper, Elizabeth Cooper; brothers, Eugene Cooper, Augustus
W. Cooper, Jr., Phillip Cooper.
Mrs. D. Musuleng is also survived by several children: Sam Hilton Herring, Jr., Boehnflahn J. Herring, Alonzo B. Herring, Mrs. Eva Mae Herring Christopher, Mrs. Madia Herring Mensah, Johnette, Laurel, Christopher, Mrs. Eunice Tubman, Amanda, Byogah, Annie and Trokon. Survivors also include 24 grand children and nine great grand children. 'D-Mus' is survived by her children: Samuel H. Herring, Jr. (Victoria), Boehnflahn J. Herring (Agnes), Alonzo B. Herring (Edwina), Eva-mae Herring-Christopher, Madia Herring-Mensah, Johnett Herring Hammond, Anie Herring-Freeman, Laurel Herring, Ruel F. Dempster (Matilda), Byogah J. Herring (Melreta), Hilton Herring (Joyce), Amanda Herring, Christopher Herring, Eunice Tubman, Lily Behna, Edwin Borbor, Roland Mitchell, Tonieh Wiles, Benoni Urey (Mai), John T. Richardson (Josephine), Belle Roberts (Louis), Myrtle Gibson, and Eric Kilby; Stepmother: Monica Taylor Cooper; Sisters: Eva-mae Caulker, Gladys Herring, Amelia Cooper, Ivy Zoe Cooper, Hannah Cooper, Elizabeth Cooper, Ethel Cooper Barrie, Evangeline Cooper Gaba, Augusta L. Cooper, Lorraine Cooper, small Amelia Cooper, Annie V. Otto, Annette Henry, Ettie Tarpeh, Tata Kromah, Marie Mason, Esther Hughes, and Josephine Richards; Brothers: Eugene, Christopher 'Borbor', Augustus, Jura, and Phillip; She was blessed with 30 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
