news_img_1250.jpgA member of the Liberian Ministers Association (LMA) has broken away from the group to form the United Ministers Association (UMA), a more inclusive association that represents all sectors of the Christian community in the State of Minnesota.  Bishop Dr. Paul Zondo said in 2006 when he joined the LMA, he was initially welcomed with open arms, saying “I was actually doing well under our former LMA boss [Father James Wilson} until a new leader [Rev. Four Deaths in Religious Clashes in Liberia

"I personally counted four bodies, but this is not necessarily the final toll," said George Tengbeh in the town of Voinjama, 450 kilometres (280 miles) north of the capital Monrovia. full story

This action on the part of the Board of Director raised concerns in certain quarters in the Liberian community. Appointment to any Executive committee in a non-profit environment such as OLM is not the prerogative of the Board, but the Executive Committee. Full story

DED FOR LIBERIANS HAS NOT YET BEEN APPROVED

However, after several telephone calls to both the White House and the US Capitol, it is clear that DED for Liberian has not yet been approved by President Barack Obama.  full story

The Season of Lent

lentcross.jpgThe season of Lent has not been well observed in much of evangelical Christianity, largely because it was associated with "high church" liturgical worship that some churches were eager to reject. However, much of the background of evangelical Christianity, for example the heritage of John Wesley, was very "high church." Many of the churches that had originally rejected more formal and deliberate liturgy are now recovering aspects of a larger Christian tradition as a means to refocus on spirituality in a culture that is increasingly secular. full story

Franken, others Fight for Liberian on DED

Senate splits over residency clause for Presidency

Capital_Building.jpgDivision has emerged in the Senate over the Joint Resolution proposing a Constitutional referendum to amend certain provisions of the Constitution.

The division relates to the controversial residency clause contained in Article 52-C of the Liberian Constitution.


It provides that no person shall be eligible to hold the office of President unless that person is resident in Liberia ten years prior to his election. FULL STORY

Elenilto to Invest $2.4 Billion on Liberian Iron Mines

president.jpgElenilto, a unit of Israels Engelinvest Group, will spend $2.4 billion developing Liberias Western Cluster iron ore deposit, the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy said.

The investment will allow Elenilto to produce as much as 1.1 billion metric tons of ore, the ministry said in a statement handed to reporters today in the capital, Monrovia. Elenilto was on Jan. 28 awarded the rights to develop the Western Cluster project by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. The project consists of three deposits and two idled mines, which were closed in 1976 and 1985 during Liberias two civil wars, the last of which ended in 2003.  full story

Another sister city for Greenville?

sinoe.gifIt appears Greenville is in the process of adopting its second sister city. Greenville native Robert Nash met with Mayor Heather Hudson Thursday to discuss a partnership with Greenville, Liberia.
Greenville is the capital of Sinoe County in Liberia. Founded by former slaves from Mississippi, Greenville is a coastal city that is trying to recover from years of civil war. Now, leaders from both cities are looking to become trade partners. Greenville, Miss., already has one sister city in Kronach, Germany, but Mayor Hudson is expected to present a proposal to City Council at Tuesdays meeting to add Greenville, Liberia as a sister city. full story

Episcopal Church of Minnesota has a new bishop

MINNESOTASPECIAL049.jpgThe Rev. Brian Prior was on Saturday, February 13 consecrated as IX Bishop of the Minnesota Episcopal Church in a ceremony at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Several thousand were in attendance, including Episcopalians from across the state, bishops and dignitaries from other dioceses of The Episcopal Church, denominational leaders, and local officials.  full story

Liberia boosts private enterprise

Liberians on DED Face Uncertainty Once Again

On March 23, 2009, President Barack Obama graciously approved of the Deferred Enforced Departure for 12 months, which will officially expire in a few days (March 23rd, 2010). Liberian President Sirleaf Seeks Second Term

Free Surgery for Liberian Children

This medical exercise which is being done in partnership with Firestone-Liberia will provide free surgical operations to children with cleft lip and palate, undescended testicles, hernia, swollen neck, hypospadias, fused fingers, and other conditions. In Liberia, the publisher of the Plain Truth newspaper and the general manager of the Seamarco Printing press will appear in court Tuesday to answer charges of sedition, criminal libel and malevolence. full story

UK bans Kenyans over corruption

The UK has issued a travel ban to more than 20 Kenyan citizens accused of corruption, the High Commissioner says.

Rob Macaire said the ban was a last resort, pointing out that no senior official had ever been convicted of corruption by a Kenyan court.

He was speaking at the launch of a new campaign aimed at tackling corruption. Full story

TRC Publishes Final Report

finalreport.jpgThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia (TRC) has announced the release and publication of its final reports after several weeks of editing and technical work leading to its publication. The report which is an edited version of the "TRC FINAL REPORT, VOLUME II, and CONSOLIDATED REPORT (UNEDITED)" was released on June 30, 2009. At least 1,500 copies of the report is now in print, courtesy of funding provided by the UNDP. full story

CDC VICTORY: A CAUSE TO CELEBRATE OR SOBER REFLECTION

m_carter1-1.jpgThere is a growing euphoria amongst the supporters and sympathizers of George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) over their recent victory in the Montserrado County Senatorial By-Election.

As is expected in the aftermath of such grueling political dual, the CDC is emboldened and is eying the 2021 Presidential Contest with heightened optimism. In fact, some supporters and political pundits are already predicting a big win for CDC in 2012. They argued that the Montserrado Poll is a litmus test for the 2012 Election. FRAUD IN OLM ELECTIONS?

yaskey.jpgburgala.jpgReports emanating from the just ended OLM Board of Directors elections confirm allegations of massive fraud and ballot tempering.

According to our correspondent, the Chairman of the OLM Election Commission, Mr. T. Benedict Giple to the shock and dismay of the many Liberian voters, discontinued the counting process after nearly 50% of the counting was completed. Mr. Giple packed up the ballot boxes and transported them to his residence without announcing when the counting process will result. He claimed that he was fatigued by the process. Full story

Liberia's Elections Commissioner Receives Threats

ames-fromayan.jpgThe chairman of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC), James Fromayan says partisans of football legend George Weah's Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) party have threatened to burn down his house and eliminate him in the process.

"The CDC people in particular have been the ones making threatening statements about me at some polling centers," he said. "They were going to burn my home. In fact they had hate messages on their FM station, King FM which had a whole lot of threatening statements about me." full story

Alfred Coleman Laid to Rest

alfred_coleman_funeral_78.jpgThe remains of Alfred Wady Coleman, III had been laid to rest in Careysburg, Montserrado County following funeral rites at the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church on Camp Johnson Road, Monrovia the People’s News has learned.

The late Mr. Coleman passed this life on Monday, October 19, 2009 at his home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota following a protracted period of illness. Our reporter in Monrovia said, the funeral service was officiated by the Rev. Dr. James Sellie, Rector of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church. Full Story

Liberia's NEC to Announce By-Election Results Saturday, but CDC Already Claims Victory

Liberia's National Elections Commission (NEC) said it will announce the final results of a highly contested senatorial by-election this Saturday. 

The election had been billed as a referendum on the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and a prelude to the 2011 general elections. But the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), the party of football legend George Weah called a news conference Thursday to say that its candidate Geraldine Doe-Sheriff had won the first round, raising the possibility of a run-off with ruling Unity Party candidate Clemenceau Urey. full story 

"We are Making History Again," says Pastor Vansiea

Untitled.jpgFor some time now, two Liberian congregations, the Joy World Mission and the Christ Universal Ministries, in the Twin cities have been working together to merge as one congregation.
 The two congregations have been holding joint worship services, prayers,  fasting, meetings and discussion on the possibility of a merger. The efforts have led to the signing to a memorandum of understanding on March 7, 2009 and a merger Resolution on October 27, 2009. In response to progress made thus far as well as the celebration of Joy World Mission's 23rd anniversary, Rev. Samuel E. In our community, however, there is a common practice to malign people that challenge the status quo. This Committee included about 40 selected members of Liberian communities in various parts of the United States (from Philadelphia, Minnesota to California), in England and in Ghana. Liberia's President Sirleaf Does Not Rule Out Re-election Bid

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf celebrated her 71st birthday Thursday in the southeastern city of Greenville, Sinoe County reportedly saying that she has not ruled out running for re-election in 2011.  

Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, campaigned on the promise that she would serve just one term. 

Presidential Press Secretary Cyrus Badio said the president has a constitutional right to run or not to run.

“What the president has said is nothing new. She has said that her primary pre-occupation right now is the fact that our citizens need jobs, our citizens need food, our citizens need security, they need health security, they need education, and when it gets to that point where it is necessary for her to make her decision she will make that decision based on all of the factors involved,” he said. full story

Rev. Prior has been married to Staci Hubbard Prior for 21 years. They have two teenage sons.

U.S. President Barack Obama Commends Liberian Leader

“I appreciate your focus on the importance of education and skills-based training, particularly in post-conflict situations,” the U.S. President said in a letter to the Liberian President. Echoing the significance of the impact of Liberia’s civil conflict on the youth population, President Obama acknowledged that Liberia has made great progress in creating the foundation for a better future, not only for its youth but for the entire population. full story

President Sirleaf Places Hold On Salary Increment At NPA

ejsportal2.jpgPresident Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has placed an immediate hold on the proposed salary increment of the management team of the National Port Authority (NPA). The President's action comes in the wake of a meeting she held with the senior management team of the National Port Authority (NPA) yesterday at the Foreign Ministry. 
Speaking to this paper late yesterday evening shortly after the meeting with the President, Presidential Press Secretary Cyrus Wleh Badio who made the disclosure said during the meeting, the President asked members of the board and the senior management team to place an immediate hold on the proposed salary increment. full story

Jess.jpgProvidence Patrolman Jesse Ferrell is named Officer of the Month for helping a teenager who was kidnapped and taken to Liberia. Patrolman Ferrell worked the phones around the clock to bring the teen home.

Willie Welson thought he was being taken to his brother's wedding this summer, but when the flight dragged on for hours he knew something wasn't right. Welson ended up stranded on the streets of his native Liberia.

One of the first calls he made was to Providence Patrolman Jesse Ferrell.

"It was Willie, telling me he was pretty upset, that he believes he was kidnapped," said Ferrell. full story

Custody battle for Liberian girls

liberia-flag.gifNew details in the custody battle over four Liberian girls adopted by an Oklahoma family. For nearly a year civil attorneys have been trying to get the girls removed from their Fairview home after their 13-year-old sister was allegedly abused by their foster parents Ardee and Penny Tyler.

Back in 2008 Ardee Tyler allegedly disciplined the girl by tying her to a bed post for nine hours.

His 19 year old son, Ashton, also confessed to sexually assaulting the same girl who was finally removed from the house, but her sisters remain with the Tyler family. full story

Duo K. Diggs, 28, of Castleton Corners, died when the 1996 Mercedes Benz he was driving on Heberton Avenue in Port Richmond struck a parked backhoe.full story

IN TRC RECOMMENDATION, LIBERIAN JOURNALIST PREDICTS DOOM
