Statement on Liberian Immigration At The Liberian National Immigration Conference Presented by
Dr. Mariah Y. Seton – National Executive President
March 10, 2010 We are humbled most particularly and optimistically spirited on the occasion of this historic Liberian National Immigration Conference, convened today on the Capitol Hill of U.S. power center. It is just 12 months ago that Liberians gathered on the Capitol Hill when thousands of our fellow citizens and their families were facing the uncertainty of their immigration status. Again today, as the deadline has once more crept upon us, and realizing the adversely far-reaching implications arising from the failure to positively impact the current deadline for the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), scheduled to expired any day from now, ULAA and all Liberians everywhere find themselves overwhelmed by the prospect of the potentially damaging consequences of the collapse of the hopes of thousands of needy Liberian families. We remain mindful of the toll inherent in the failure to grant reprieve for DED and adjust Liberians’ immigration status and the outcome it portends for Liberia’s newfound democracy and mushrooming economy. However, with God above and given the interest demonstrated by, and the participation of, various stakeholders, we are prayerful and optimistic that there is an answer. In this light, we are immensely thankful to Congressman Donald S. Payne, Sr. and Councilman Donald S. Payne, Jr. and their staff for their support for the Liberian immigration cause and Senator Jack Reed’s Immigration Bill for Liberians. We also remain thankful to the various U.S. Congressional leaders, Representatives and Senators for their unending support. Thank you.
