U L Alumni Chorus Donates to the University of Liberia

The University of Liberia Alumni Chorus made a donation of US $10,000.00 as a scholarship fund to the chorus_38.jpgUniversity of Lliberia, the Peoples news has learned.

The Alumni Chorus established the scholarship fund at the University of Liberia in honor and memory of it's deceased director and former associate professor of music at the university. The fund is named: "The Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos Memorial Scholarship Fund" A delegation representing the Alumni Chorus made the presentation on August 4, 2010 on the main campus of the University of Liberia in Monrovia, Liberia.

The University of Liberia Alumni Chorus was formally organized in early 2009

by former members. Presently the roster of the Alumni Chorus comprises only alumni who sang under the direction of Mrs. Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Recently members of the Liberian Choral Group, some of whom currently live in the United States and Liberia recently assembled to express thanks and appreciation to their late mentor and legendary, Agnes Nebo Von Ballmoos who taught them from Italian Madrigals to gospel to traditional songs sung in the villages of Liberia as far back as 1961 to 1990.

According to the Chorus' official web site, the University of Liberia Alumni Chorus was organized as a non-profit organization in the state of Massachusetts with the primary goal of providing assistance to the University of Liberia in the following areas:

Award scholarships to deserving students seeking higher education at the University of Liberia; Give teaching awards of excellence to faculty members who distinguish themselves by their contribution to the university and its students; Establish a Fine Arts Center in honor of Mrs. Agnes Nebo von Ballmoos, Liberia’s only ethno-musicologist and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Liberia until her death in 2000 and Assist the university in its efforts to reestablish itself as an accredited institution of higher education.

The Chorus held its first concert and major fund raiser in August 2009. The second annual ULAC concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA.
